#600

Notes. A repeatable, free-text field. When using more than one #600 field, divide the information up to correspond with ISBD area divisions, and enter it in that order, i.e. starting with notes relating to the title and statement of responsibility, and then proceeding to publication details, and so forth. Within each note, use ISBD punctuation (in describing authorship, for example). The various types of notes are described below in the order in which they would appear if they all occurred in the same record.

NB: #600 fields are not used to record information relating to the copy; this is entered into subfield |c of the #800 fields.

Title-related notes

Notes in this area are most commonly used in photolithographic reprints of pre-modern books, which constitute a very large part of our collection. Our practice is to derive the main title from the original, not the title-page of the reproduction, which we record in a note, with a corresponding #230 field:

9zi shu bai jia
9bai zi quan shu

9gu shi
9ying yin song ben gu shi

In pre-modern books (where the title is derived from the first chapter of the text), what appears to be a title-page (書名頁) is actually what is correctly termed feng mian 封面:

9zhou li jie xun

9zeng bu hui yin
9zeng bu shi wu yin

9sheng ji zhi tu

Alternative titles should be noted:

9da wu jing jiao zhu
9niu jing da quan

If the only difference is a reign period, although an added title should always be entered, it is usually otiose to make a note. This situation is particularly common in the case of gazetteers, and in the following examples a #600 is not needed:

9shao wen xian zhi
9yong zheng shao wen xian zhi

9min guo hai men xian tu zhi
9hai men xian tu zhi

If the work contains sections worthy of mention but which it would be inappropriate to enter as separate titles in fields #200a, #201 &c, enter them in a note:

Author-related notes

If the statement of responsibility is either wrong or absent, and the authorship can be discovered from an outside source, make an appropriate note. Use ISBD punctuation where necessary. Index the names from #300 or #310 fields:

9fu nai qi

9qian pei rong

In cases where the author's name is contained in the title, no note is necessary - it is simply indexed from a #300 field in its standard form, creating an author authority record where necessary:

9tao da yong wen ji
9tao da yong

9wang kai yun shou pi tang shi xuan
9wang kai yun

9ma jia wen ji
9bai xiao guang

Imprint-related notes

If there are differences between the information given in the colophon and the title-page, make a note if they are considered significant. In such cases of discrepancy, the colophon is usually right:

9shang hai shu dian

If the work is a photolithographic reprint of an older edition, give details of the original edition in a note:

If publishers or congshu titles are mentioned in such notes, they are indexed from fields #640 and #646, which bear the same relation to the #600 field as #440 and #446 do to the #409 field.
